Minimum order quantity is the first question a new buyer asks and the one most
often answered vaguely. The reason is that MOQ is not really one number — it is
two different numbers for two different situations, and confusing them is how
buyers end up committing to a container when they wanted to test a colour.
A stock order is hair that already exists. It is in a shade and
length that was made for general sale, and it can go to any account. A stock order
carries a low minimum, because nothing is being produced for you specifically.
A production order is hair made to your specification — a
custom colour, a custom length, a custom weight per pack, or your brand on the
packaging. The minimum is higher, and it has to be, because those goods cannot be
sold to anyone else if you walk away. The minimum is not a sales tactic; it is the
point at which a made-to-order production run becomes viable.
A supplier who will not sell you a small quantity in a stock shade is telling
you something. Either the goods are not actually in stock, or the business is not
set up to serve accounts that are still evaluating. Neither is fatal, but both are
worth knowing before you commit.
The purpose of a small first order is not to save money. It is to verify the
grade, the colour and the construction against your own standard, and to see how
the supplier behaves on an order where there is little margin for them. That is
information you cannot get any other way.
A sample proves the grade and the colour. It does not prove consistency,
because consistency is a property of production over time, not of one bundle. So
the useful sample question is not “is this good?” but “will the tenth order look
like this one?”
That is a question about process, and the answer is verifiable: does the
supplier work to a written specification, is the colour matched against a physical
ring rather than a photograph, and is there a batch record you can hold them to. A
supplier who records specifications will produce consistent repeat orders. One who
works from memory will not.
Some suppliers charge for samples and ship at the buyer’s cost, sometimes
crediting that cost against a later order. Others provide free samples on
qualifying orders. Neither approach is a red flag. What matters is that it is
stated up front rather than appearing as a surprise line on the invoice.
If a production minimum is above what you can commit to, there are legitimate
ways forward that are better than paying for stock you cannot sell:
What you should not do is let a minimum pressure you into a first order large
enough to be a real loss if the hair is wrong. That is the one outcome the whole
